Maari Ma FluMist and other Immunisations for Winter 2026

2026 FLU VACCINES NOW AVAILABLE AT MAARI MA INCLUDING A NEEDLE FREE OPTION FOR 2 TO UNDER 5 YEAR OLDS

Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation is starting its annual winter immunisation campaign with a clear message to communities – to prepare now for the 2026 influenza season.

Maari Ma CEO, Richard Weston said the 2026 flu vaccine is now in stock in Broken Hill, Wilcannia and Balranald and this year a new nasal spray flu vaccine is available.

“For the first time we have a needle free vaccine called FluMist which will be available for children aged 2 years to under 5 years of age.

“The vaccine is given as a spray into the nose, with a small amount sprayed into each nostril making it a really convenient option for kids.

“It’s been used for many years in countries such as the United States and United Kingdom and has been shown to be safe, well tolerated and effective in children.

“It will just be for that 2 to under 5 year age group though and children over 5 and adults will receive the usual flu shot” Mr Weston said.

Mr Weston said all flu vaccines provide protection against the main flu strains expected this winter and vaccination is strongly encouraged for people at higher risk of severe illness, including older adults, young children and people with chronic disease.

“Influenza can cause serious illness particularly in young children, older people (especially those aged 65 years and over), people with chronic medical conditions (such as heart, lung, kidney disease or diabetes) and people with weakened immune systems.

“Getting vaccinated helps protect against influenza and reduces the risk of severe illness, complications and hospitalisation along with simple things like washing your hands, covering your cough and staying home if you’re sick.

“Flu vaccination is free and recommended for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over”.

“We’re getting our campaign underway now because protection is highest in the first few months after vaccination, which is why getting vaccinated before or early in winter is recommended” Mr Weston said.

Maari Ma will be conducting a daily walk-in clinic from April, but people - can also book an appointment for vaccination or receive their vaccination during a scheduled clinic visit.

To support a family-based and walk-in vaccination approach, Maari Ma will also be providing flu vaccination this year for non-Aboriginal clients such as partners who would not normally be eligible, so that families can be vaccinated together and the whole community is protected.

Other winter vaccinations available at Maari Ma are COVID-19 boosters, RSV protection for eligible infants and young children and pneumococcal vaccine for older adults and people with chronic disease.
